The year of 1997 was certainly a dark one thanks to the reign of terror that He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named brought to the wizarding world in pursuit of the famed Harry Potter. A reign of terror that forced many witches and wizards to choose where their allegiances lay, which very well could have been a choice between life and death. Even for a family as well respected in the wizarding community as the Shafiq family, who instead chose to hide and wait the war out. Two particular members of the Shafiq family (Renee and Marcellus) welcomed a baby boy into the family just a week before the famed Harry Potter was to visit the town of Godric's Hollow. Born in a Muggle hospital in London to a famed Veela actress and a pureblood wizard (who worked for the Ministry up until the death of Rufus Scrimgeour on April 1st), young Manuel was welcome with love surrounded by family who had come from so far as North America at the announcement of his arrival on this earth. Within a few months, Harry Potter had defeated the Dark Lord and it was safe to come out of hiding.

Early years for Manuel were full of travel, as with his mother's profession she was required to travel to various places for the filming of the different movies she'd feature in over time, which took him to places such as France, Japan and even the United States. This was the first time where Manuel could say he truly remembers his childhood, having been exposed to different cultures ways of performing magic, even with his mother's different magic with her being a half Veela. He fell in love with magic itself. Like most children, he was prone to random accidental magic, once setting an old coffee table ablaze in a fit of anger and had once charmed a toy dragon to dance to some music.

At the age of 11 it was time for Manuel to visit Ollivander's for the traditional buying of a wand. To explain how nervous Manuel was for the wand choosing ceremony would be a bit troublesome, all day his magic had been going on on random objects throughout both their home as well as in Diagon Alley whilst shopping that entire morning. Meeting Mr. Ollivander for the first time was odd, as Manuel had never expected to be outright quizzed by the elder man about things that seemingly had nothing to do with magic. He had taken measurements of his arm length, looked deep into his eyes, even checked the color of his tongue before winking at the young boy and turning to search the hundreds of wands he kept in store. While he searched he called back toward the family, telling Marcellus and Renee a lighthearted joke about how if Manuel were any more nervous that he'd send the building into the atmosphere with accidental magic. The first wand Mr. Ollivander brought to him wasn't a good fit, and didn't react positively to Manuel's touch, raining sparks from its tip as soon as he formed a grip on it. Returning to his shelves, Mr. Ollivander began to speak about how there was a wand in his possession that carried a core with a rarely obtained core of the wings of a Fairy. Being that Christmas had passed just last month, it isn't uncommon that Wizards have left over Fairy wings and hairs left over whether it be from shedding or.. various other methods. Dusting off the box, he removed the aspen wand from inside and handed it to the young boy and instructed him to give it a wave.

Sorted into Ravenclaw, Manuel immediately took to learning as much as he could about any subject presented to him. Particularly charms became his clear favorite. He formed a quick bond with Professor Flitwick over their love of the subject, and over time would become somewhat of an understudy to the teacher. When presented with the opportunity, Manuel didn't hesitate to join the school's dueling club in which he rose quickly through the ranks to become one of the top duelist of his year starting at just his third year. Recognizing his talent, Prof. Flitwick approached him and asked him if he'd heard of a group called the silver spears at this point in his studies, which he had in the history of magic class. The group at one point in time were a secretive dueling club whose members ere all reputed to be owners of aspen wands. Flitwick told him that the group were indeed very real, as he himself had been a member of the club, and was formally inviting the young Manuel to join them due to his irrefutable talent for dueling even other wizards a few years his senior. Manuel didn't hesitate to join, and by being inducted into the group, it provided him with first hand experience dueling wizards many more times experienced than he was, who shared pointers and stories of famous duels they had been apart of, Flitwick even telling of a time when he and two other teachers at Hogwarts had dueled the Dark Lord during the Battle of Hogwarts. As time progressed, Manuel himself continued his aggressive climb to the top in the Hogwarts dueling circuit all the way up to his 7th year, earning himself a few academic achievement awards in Charms as well as dueling ability.

On the eve of his graduation, Professor Flitwick pulled Manuel aside and told him that with his ability in charmswork and dueling talent, Manuel would be a fool if he hadn't considered making a career out of the two. Which ushered him into the professional dueling circuit at the fresh age of 17, under the tutelage of a Charms Master who aided him by teaching him spells not taught in Hogwarts to increase his knowledge and chances of winning. On the dueling circuit, Manuel was a force to be reckoned with, 2 vs 2's and especially single duels, the talent he exhibited was nothing short of masterful in his young age. With nothing short of hard work and dedication to master his craft, Manuel was crowned dueling champion by the age of 20 in a major upset win against the former champion who had reigned champion for more than a few years. Like the former champion, Manuel has gained a great deal of fame and notoriety in his position around the wizarding community.

When rumors of Professor Flitwick's retirement reached his ears, Manuel immediately wanted to take up his former Professor's position at Hogwarts and immediately sought out to do so. He figured there couldn't be a more capable candidate for the job than someone who was personally taught by the former position holder for more than half of his life at the time. Though he had a few competitors to beat out, Manuel did come out on top of the selection process, having nothing but his tutelage under Flitwick to thank for his appointment to Master of Charms at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry at the age of 25.
